Stormwater basins (or ponds) are constructed to collect stormwater and release it slowly. A retention basin retains water permanently, due to a riser with a low flow orifice. The riser is normally a concrete or metal structure to regulate the water level. The orifice of a detention (or dry) basin is located at the bottom of the basin allowing the water to drain out keeping the basin dry between storms (Sustainable stormwater management, 2009).
