Abstract
|
This survey examines the correlation between land- and water use as well as the increased competition between different ways of utilization on the background of the rising shortage of water and land. It comprises a typologisation of water rights systems and their institutional inclusion with regard to economical efficiency, social redistribution effects and ecological sustainability. The study derives policy recommendations from the analysis, in which the “demand management” on the regulation of entitlements to disposal and the configuration of allocative mechanisms have priority. It takes a global approach with case studies on Chile, India and South Africa. The study will be of interest to anyone looking for a general introduction to water use challenges and the importance of defined land and water rights. It also provides policy recommendations.
