Contour bunds are embankment of earth established on fields with medium slope. In between two contours agriculture can be practised and along the bunds legume trees which fixes nitrogen can be planted. They help to retain run-off water and prevent soil erosion. Contour ploughing is tillage along the contour, a line of the same elevation across a slope.
The ‘mini’ ridges and furrows help to decrease the run-off velocity of run-off water and to infiltrate into the soil. This technique also helps to control soil erosion and the erosion of fertilizers /nutrients from the field.
The following video shows the successful application of contour bunds in Kenya.
