Abstract
|
The book offers a comprehensive presentation of GIZ’s approach to ecologically sound agriculture for tropical small holder farming. It is about the question of how to achieve high and sustainable productivity in family farming with a minimum of expensive, external inputs (mineral fertilizers etc.) by making maximum use of local farm resources, like soil, water and vegetation. The key of the approach lies in the adaption of farming practices to the specific site conditions of a farm and the local economy. The foundation of the approach with a concise introduction into ecological conditions of farming in the tropics are laid out. The chapters on climate, vegetation and soils are followed by an introduction into the theory of the approach, the overall objectives and causal links of production ecology and economy of small holdings in developing countries. A framework of how to apply the approach in extension work rounds off the chapter. The second part of the book is a presentation of research results achieved with practical farming methods that have a particular importance for the preservation and enhancement of fertility and water holding capacity of soils: Composting, manures, mulching and green manures. The book closes off with a short description of methods enhancing productive and stable agro-ecosystems with the means of vegetation design (agro-forestry, multiple cropping) and suggestions on how to use symbiotic interactions.
