Irrigation in agriculture is the supply of water to land or crops by means of channels or pipes.[1]
At present, about 250 Mio. ha or 17 % of the globally cultivated areas are irrigated. The contribution of the irrigated fields to the global food production is estimated at about 36 %.[2]
